Borough Based Work

Each of the 33 municipalities provides community safety services. However, there is not a standard approach to this work; each one providing services in different ways in partnership with their borough based police service. To an extent this is intentional – as the municipality based partnerships have identified different priorities to tackle and have used whatever resources - short, medium or long term that have come to hand.

Because of this approach to the development of crime and disorder reduction there is no benchmark standard for a programme of essential crime and disorder reduction activities. There is also only limited co-ordination and partnership working across borough boundaries.

In addition to core crime and disorder work undertaken by both individual local agencies - who are often part of Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRP) there are voluntary organisations, within most boroughs, which provide Victim Support Services, Community and Police Engagement Groups and Independent Custody Visitor Services (normally funded through the Metropolitan Police Authority) and other specialist services such as domestic violence refuges, youth intervention projects etc. The links to these specialist services can normally be found via the borough links listed below.
